United States Dominates All-Time Summer Olympic Gold Medal Count After Paris 2024

As the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris concluded on Sunday with a grand Closing Ceremony, the United States and China ended the Games tied at the top of the gold medal count, each securing 40 gold medals. This marked the first time in Summer Olympic history that two nations shared the top spot in the gold medal tally. Despite this tie, the United States emerged victorious in the overall medal count, amassing 126 medals compared to China’s 91.


The tie in the gold medal count has sparked curiosity among fans and analysts alike: where do these two powerhouse nations stand in the all-time Summer Olympics medal rankings?


The United States remains the undisputed leader in Olympic history. Since the inception of the modern Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens, Team USA has amassed an astonishing 1,061 gold medals, more than double the number secured by any other nation. Their total medal count stands at 2,629, further solidifying their dominance on the global stage.



In comparison, the Soviet Union, which no longer competes following its dissolution in 1991, ranks second with 395 gold medals and 1,010 total medals. The Soviet Union is the only other country to have surpassed the 1,000-medal mark in Summer Olympic history.


China, despite its rapid rise as a sporting superpower, remains in fourth place on the all-time gold medal list with 263 golds, trailing behind Great Britain’s 284. However, China ranks sixth in the overall medal count with 636 medals, behind France and Germany.
